Welcome to the Portland Chinese Golf Club
|   "I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all the players of the Protland Chinese Golf Club, both tenured and newly joined members. Looking ahead there are numerous tournaments that help honor the memories of our founding members, not to mention the out of town tournaments held by our fellow federations. Let us not forget the 4 city Tournament that Seattle is hosting this year, it should be spectacular, and the Chinook winds tournament in Lincoln City."
"The memories that are made on the courses and the friendships that are forged are what has continued to make our Club grow and be successful. Here is to many rounds of good golf and hours of laughter." ~April Okazaki, President
The Portland Chinese Golf Club was founded in 1959 as a social group of golfers whose goal is to promote the game of golf, build new friendships and foster existing friendships. Membership is open to all men and women.
About 20 Club outings are held each year; begin in March and run through October with anywhere from 2 to 4 outings per month. All outings are on Sundays with the exception of the Club Championship and which is a 2-day tournament played on two different courses. Our Founders Cup Tournament is also a two day tournament which is held of two consecutive Sundays. All are tournaments are flighted so competition is among competitors of equal skill levels and prizes are awarded both on gross and net scores. We also have KP’s on the par-3 holes and a string hole (i.e. to win the string hole your ball must be on the green and within the length of a string).
Our club has XX members with an average of XX players competing in each events. The events use the traditional medal play format as well as a two person best ball, a four person scramble and a 16 person match play tournament.
While all competitions are governed by USGA Rules of Golf we have a few local rules to allow the completions to be fun and enjoyable events. For example, we have a mercy rule that the maximum stokes on any hole is 10; if you put two balls in a water hazard you may drop your third ball on the other side of the hazard (of course you have to count all the strokes and penalty strokes), and tall grass may be played a lateral hazard.
Official USGA GHIN handicaps indexes are computed by the USGA thru the Oregon Golf Association.
On the social side, we have and Annual Awards Banquet, a BBQ, and a potluck. The BBQ and potluck parties traditional follow the last day of the Club Championship and the outing at the OGA GC. Of course, we always gather at the 19th hole to rib each other about great shots and almost “hole in one. Last year the club hosted its annual hamburger feeds after the outing at Stone Creek GC and the Elk Ridge GC. At last tournament of the year, we have a ”Turkey Shoot” where the prizes are gift cards for turkeys.
The club co-host the Chinook Winds tournament with other area Asian clubs and the Chinook Winds Casino. We also try to get discounted play at Shalisan Golf Course on the Sunday.
We are a member of the Federation of Chinese Golf Clubs which is made up of 22 member clubs primarily in the Western US and Canada. Federation events are hosted by local member clubs and held in various locations. In 2014, the Hawaii club hosted it inaugural tournament at the ???Resort in Hawaii. The Tucson club host its tournament every three years. They will be hosting their 2015 tournament in May 2015.
We are members of the Oregon Golf Association (OGA), the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA), and the Washington State Golf Association (WSGA). Our membership allows our members to play at discounted rates on the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, OR and The Home Course in Dupont, WA.
The member clubs in the NW host their Inter-city tournament around the Labor Day holiday. The member clubs in Vancouver, BC, Seattle, WA, Victoria, BC, and Portland, OR rotate hosting the Inter-city Tournament with each club hosting the Inter-city Tournament once every four years. Seattle will host the 2015 tournament, Vancouver in 2016, Portland in 2017, and back to Victoria [host of the 2014 tournament] in 2018.
The California bay area clubs host a tournament around the Memorial Day holiday and is planning for their 20?? Tournament.
The Los Angeles club host their tournament around the Memorial Day holiday and every year host a Fall tournament in Las Vegas area.
The Vancouver and Portland clubs have an invitational grudge match from time to time called the Border Cup that uses the Ryder Cup match play format. The match is played with the losers picking up the tab for dinner and drinks. The last match was held when Victoria hosted their tournament in 2014. Each club uses a method of their own choosing to select it team members.
In 2012, the Portland club team consisting of Clark Louie, Yoshio Matsuzaki, Jerry Low, John Sturges, Fred Watanabe, Laville Fendors, Pai Vongthongthip, Dan Hutchins, Jerry Williams, Bill Chan, Carl Louie, and Waimun Yee play the Vancouver club in Vancourver, BC. Unfortunately we got stomped. Dinner including family, good friends, and honored guest was held at ???? in Richmond, BC. While the food is alway first class; the comaradrie, ribbing, and partying was brutally memorable.
In 2014, the Portland club team consisting of Jerry Williams, Bill Chan, Clark Louie and Jerry Low won and brought the trophy back to the US.
We donate money to support the Meals on Wheels effort provided by Mary Gagnon Fook Lok Chapter of Loaves and fishes wheel on meals.
