2019 Pacific Rim Tournament

The 2019 Pacific Rim Tournament was a fun experience for all the attendees as Chinook Winds Casino hosted another fantastic weekend for our group. Most golfers stay awake at night trying to figure out how to best attack Hole #10, as that diabolical Par 5 can make or break your round. This year for some reason Hole #9 caused many to take some “Big Numbers” as they may already have “10” in their head??

This year we had 58 golfers and 21 guests sign up and most competed in the “Slot Tournament” on Saturday night that had 5 groups pressing their luck for 3 minutes on the machines to hopefully cash in on the Top 5 prizes offered in Sand Dollar credit by Chinook Winds.

2019 Ron Eng Memorial Trophy – Lek Vongthongthip

We had 32 golfers at Stone Creek GC to compete for the Ron Eng Memorial Trophy and enjoy a BBQ Burger social after golf. Darryl Inouye set the front nine on fire by posting a 41 (net 26.5) to be the heavy favorite to add another trophy next to the Club Championship hardware he got last year. The back nine became a reality check and a brutal 5 putt at #16 proved costly. Laville Fendors was having a good day also, but overthinking the firming greens took away the confidence of playing for the back of the cup; resulting in some heartbreaking misses on some easy putts. This opened the door for Lek Vongthongthip who rallied in the back nine to card a 38 with a birdie – birdie finish to have his name etched on the trophy. A comment was made on how his ugly swing can get him a career of 3 Hole in One’s and a Ron Eng Memorial Trophy. He said this was his first win since he joined the club and relived each of his Hole in One’s. This brought up the debate of which is more memorable, winning the Club Championship or getting a Hole in One?? Clark Louie couldn’t remember too many trophies that Ron Eng won, but sure appreciates that Ron got a Hole in One at Forest Hills Hole #17 that was about 185 yards.

2019 Awards & Election Banquet

A well attended event at the Stockpot Broiler this year. The program started with a slide show tribute to Jon Makanani, as we took a journey with him to the road trips to Tucson, Reno, Sacramento, Las Vegas and the NW Intercity rotation. Great memories of banquets, BBQ’s and golf outings were brought back through the pictures. Dinner featured Braised Beef Brisket and Mediterranean Breast of Chicken that was enjoyed by all. We once again presented donations to Ikoi No Kai (Mr. Don Matsuda) and the Portland Chinese Scholarship Foundation (Ms. Gloria Wong) of which the respective representatives were most appreciative for their organizations. Dan Hutchins did a great job with door prizes that featured top prizes of: Clickgear golf cart, Garmin GPS watch, Zinn laser range finder and RBZ hybrid clubs. Congratulations to Brandon Vanderberg for winning an entry to the NW Intercity as we head up to Seattle this Labor Day.

Vice President April Okazaki presented awards to winners of our trophy tournaments. Miriam Yoshioka received a $100.00 from the club for her Hole in One she achieved at Chinook Winds this past year.

Farewell to our beloved Jon Makanani

We have received some unfortunate news that our long time Handicap Chair and friend to the Portland Chinese Golf Club has passed away. The Makanani family is planning a service in Kauai on May 18, 2019.

Jon Makanani will be missed and I’m sure we all have fond memories of his time with the club.
